2008 Alfa Romeo National Convention

Time Trials and Touring at Autobahn

Time Trials

The time trials event will be held on Thursday June 19th at the Autobahn Country Club facility, built on 350 acres of gently rolling countryside near Joliet. The club was constructed over the last few years and so is a very modern track boasting superb facilities. It has two tracks, north and south, which can be run separately or combined. The tracks were designed by Alan Wilson, a preeminent circuit designer who has international racing experience with both motorcycles and automobiles. His design credits include the 2.5-mile track at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, and the 1.9-mile Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, Michigan. His tracks are renowned both for their challenging layouts and steadfast attention to safety.

For our event, we will use the north track, which is 1.46 miles in length. With nine turns it is quite a tight track, well suited to Alfas as it rewards good handling more than power.

A great video of Andy Besic lapping the track in his GTV can be found on-line here: http://www.alfarace08.com/TimeTrial.aspx

More information about the facility is available at the Autobahn Country Club web site: http://www.autobahncountryclub.net/

Tech for the track events will be at the convention hotel from 5:00 – 8:30 PM on Wednesday June 18th. If you miss that, or would rather attend the Welcome Party that evening, you can also get tech’d at the track. Tech will be available there starting at approximately 7:10 AM; be sure to arrive early so you are ready for the drivers’ meeting at 8:20 AM. We will be using the tech/points sheet originally produced by Russ Neely and adapted for this year’s event. The classification points sheet and tentative schedule can also be found on the Time Trial web site page above. CAROC prides itself in providing plenty of track time and this event will be no exception.

Touring Session

Fancy a go at driving your car as it was meant to be driven, but don’t feel ready for full speed competition? Touring will be offered for about 50 minutes during the lunch break, with a touring drivers’ meeting starting at about 12:30 PM. Why not join the Illinois River Valley Tour which leaves the hotel at 9:00 AM and finishes at the track – touring is free for all tour participants! Get warmed up with an enjoyable drive through the countryside, then have a blast around the track before finishing off with a leisurely lunch while you watch the time trailers do their thing.
